Our Mesorah

For thousands of years, the Torah has passed from generation to generation through an unbroken chain of transmission. Yet that transmission did not take place without periods of upheaval, uncertainty, and profound challenge.Drawing exclusively from Torah sources, Our Mesorah traces the transmission of the Torah across the centuries with rigor and clarity. Rabbi Sholom Schochet examines the challenges encountered, the efforts of Chazal and later authorities to preserve and restore textual precision, and the halachic repercussions that followed. Are the words and letters of our Sefer Torah identical to those given by Moshe Rabbeinu? What became of the Sifrei Torah of Moshe Rabbeinu and Ezra Hasofer? Why did Chazal acknowledge uncertainty concerning parts of the Torah’s text? Why did Ezra Hasofer place dots above certain words? Why do pesukim quoted in the Gemara occasionally differ from the text of our Sefer Torah? And why did Rashi’s Sefer Torah contain an extra letter? Our Mesorah confronts these questions honestly and carefully, offering a powerful defense of the Torah’s authenticity and a moving tribute to the guardians who preserved it. This landmark sefer reveals the strength of our mesorah and will forever transform the way readers behold the Sefer Torah while declaring, “V’zos haTorah”—This is the Torah that Moshe gave us.Includes the bonus supplement Matan Torah: A Timeless Timeline.
