Chinuch With Chessed

Rabbi Yaakov Bender, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway, is also internationally recognized as a "gadol b'chinuch." He built his yeshivah into one of the premier chinuch institutions in the United States. He is a wise and empathetic educator, who understands well the thoughts and feelings of his students - and their parents. His voice and opinions are sought on almost every important issue of Torah education today. In Chinuch With Chessed Rabbi Bender shares his insights and his decades of experience in dealing with children's education. The questions posed to him (as a member of Yated Neeman's Chinuch Roundtable, from where these essays are culled) are real, sent by parents and mechanchim. looking for expert guidance. The answers, too, are "real": realistic, practical, and very, very wise. My daughter has a social problem in school; how much should I, as her mother, interfere? How can each of my children share their Shabbos parashah sheets without making the Shabbos meal tedious, long and boring? Our son is a likable, good boy, with a mild case of ADHD. With medication he has no problem keeping up with his studies. Do we have to tell the yeshivah he is applying to, knowing it will probably result in a rejection letter? I'm thinking about home schooling my child. What are the benefits? The pitfalls? In the questions collected in Chinuch with Chessed, we find our own lives and challenges. In Rabbi Bender's answers we gain clarity and a new understanding of how to become full and successful partners with our children's schools, working together to give children the very best chinuch they can have.
